WHEN SAN MARINO MADE HISTORY
On This Day In 1993, striker Davide Gualtieri gave San Marino the lead against England in a World Cup qualifier. The goal was timed at 8.3 seconds, which remained the fastest World Cup goal scored in either qualifying or the finals, until Christian Benteke scored after seven seconds for Belgium against Gibraltar on 16 March 2017. The Three Lions took twenty minutes to equalise, but eventually won the match 7–1. Both England and San Marino failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. Gualtieri's strike was his first and only goal for "La Serenissima"(a nickname for the San Marino national team). He played for San Marino between 1993 to 1999, earning 9 caps.
