Happy Birthday to former Watford, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Charlton Athletic winger John Charles Bryan Barnes who turns 56 today. He spent six years with Watford where he scored 85 goals in 296 games, reaching the FA Cup finals in 1984 and the semi-finals in 1987. Barnes won eight trophies with Liverpool between 1987 to 1997 also netting 106 goals in 403 games. At the international level, he scored 11 goals in 79 caps for England. By the time of his last appearance for England in 1995, he had played more times for Liverpool than any other black player. He has managed the likes of Celtic, Jamaica and Tranmere Rovers. Barnes currently works as a commentator and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport .
He broke the British transfer record(for a defender) twice when he joined Leeds United(November 2000) and Manchester United(July 2002).
At Manchester United, he scored 8 goals in 455 games between 2002 to 2014, winning 14 trophies.
He earned his first senior international cap in a match against Cameroon in 1997, setting a record as the youngest defender to play for England at the time(19 years and 8 days). In all, he scored 3 goals in 81 caps for the Three Lions, also captaining the team at some point.
In September 2017, he announced his intention to become a professional boxer, partly to help him cope with the death of his wife.
His brother, Anton, was formerly a centre back, for St Mirren. Former England international striker Les Ferdinand and former Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Kane Ferdinand are his cousins.

He started his career with Atletico Madrid where he made 84 appearances between 2009 to 2011, also winning the UEFA Europa League(2009/2010) and UEFA Super Cup(2010).
Since joining Manchester United in 2011, he has kept 102 Premier League clean sheets(374 games in all competitions), also winning seven trophies.
He helped Spain's under-17 team win the 2007 European Championship, and finish second at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup(behind Nigeria). He was the captain for the Spain under-21 national team that won the European Championship in 2011 and 2013 , and also competed in the 2012 Olympics. He currently has 41 caps for the Spain senior national team.

On 3 April 2019, he made his first league start for Chelsea and assisted Olivier Giroud for the opening goal in a 3–0 win over Brighton. In doing so, he became the youngest player to assist a goal on his first start for the club in the Premier League era, aged 18 years and 146 days.
Born to Ghanaian parents, he has represented England at various youth levels. He was a member of the England U-17 side who won the World Cup in 2017.
He made his senior debut for England on 22 March as a 70th-minute substitute in a 5–0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley Stadium. Upon doing so, he became the youngest-ever player to make his debut in a competitive match for England, aged 18 years and 135 days, breaking the record set by Duncan Edwards in 1955 by 40 days. Three days later, he made his first competitive start for England and impressed in a 5–1 win over Montenegro, registering an assist for one of Chelsea teammate Ross Barkley 's two goals. Upon making his full debut, he became the second youngest ever player to start a competitive match for England, after Wayne Rooney.
