ABOUTRIKA: A ROLE MODEL FOR AFRICAN HOME-BASED PLAYERS
He spent his entire footbal career in Egypt where he played for Tersana SC and Al Ahly. With Al Ahly, he scored 109 goals in 273 games, also winning 23 trophies, including seven consecutive Egyptian Premier League titles. He also helped his club Al-Ahly to win the bronze medal in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006.
At International level, he is the fourth highest goalscorer in Egyptian national team history with 38 goals in 100 caps and was a member of the Pharaohs' side who won two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2006 and 2008.
He announced his retirement via Twitter on 20 December 2013, after Egypt failed to qualify to 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Mohamed Aboutrika is 41 today.
