A DEBUT FOR LEGENDS


On This Day In 1964, 17-year-old Hendrik Johannes Cruijff made his professional debut for Ajax against GVAV, scoring the only goal for "de Godenzonen"(a nickname for Ajax) in a 3–1 defeat. In two spells for Ajax, Cruyff made 369 appearances, scoring 270 goals. He also won 17 trophies during his time with the club.


On This Day In 1997, England beat Cameroon 2-0 at Wembley Stadium with goals from Paul Scholes and Robbie Fowler on a night Rio Gavin Ferdinand (pictured) made his international debut for the Three Lions. At the age of 19 years and 8 days, Ferdinand became the youngest defender to play for England at the time(a record broken in 2006 by Micah Richards).
