On This Day In 2010, 21-year-old Gareth Frank Bale scored his first career hat-trick as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur(goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes had been sent off in the eighth minute for a
professional foul on Inter's Jonathan Biabiany) lost 4-3 at home to Inter Milan in the Champions League. With this, Bale became the first player to score a Champions League hat-trick versus Inter. Javier Zanetti had earlier scored in the 2nd minute of the game to become the oldest player to score in the tournament(37 years, 71 days). This was only his second ever Champions League goal; his first came in December 1998 in a match in a 2–0 win against Sturm Graz. Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o was directly involved in four goals for Inter, scoring two and assisting two as well.

Happy Birthday to former Julius Berger, Maccabi Haifa, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Guangzhou R&F, Al-Rayyan, Reading, Kayserispor and Coventry City striker Yakubu Ayegbeni who turns 37 today. At Maccabi Haifa, he, became the first  African and the fifth youngest player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick, netting all three goals in a 3-0 win over Greek side Olympiacos F.C. on 24 September 2002. He is the second highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals. Capped 57 times by the Super Eagles, Yakubu is the third highest scorer in the history of the Nigeria national football team with 21 goals to his name. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Yakubu notably missed an open goal from three metres against South Korea in the last Group game, but later went on to score a penalty in an eventual 2-2 draw.
