He played professional football for the likes of Mutzig, Mulhouse, ASPV Strasbourg and RC Strasbourg, but retired in 1981.

As AS Monaco manager, he won two major titles, including 1987/1988 French Ligue 1 title but their failure to regain the league title in later seasons led to his departure from the club by mutual consent in 1994.

He was the manager of
Arsenal from 1996 to 2018, where he was the longest-serving and most successful in the club's history. He won 17 trophies, including the 2003/2004 Premier League where the Gunners went 38 games unbeaten. He holds the record for being the most successful FA Cup manager in history with seven wins to his name. He also holds the record for most games managed in the Premier League with 828 games, all with Arsenal. He broke the record set by Alex Ferguson, who had managed 810 games with Manchester United from the Premier League's inception to his retirement at the end of the 2012–13 season. Under his regime, Arsenal lost 8-2 away to Manchester United in August 2011, the worst defeat in the Gunner's history. Under his management, Arsenal acquired it's current club-record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of £56 million. Aubameyang has scored 49 goals in 75 games since joining the Gunners in January 2018.

Arsène Charles Ernest Wenger is 70 today.
