IN MEMORY OF THE WOUNDED CATS

On This Day In 2014, Graziano Pelle scored twice as Southampton humbled Sunderland AFC 8-0 in a Premier League played at Saint Mary's Stadium. Liam Bridcutt, Santiago Vergini and Patrick van Aanholt all scored in their own net. With this, the Black Cats became the first and the only team in Premier League history to score three own goals in a single game. This was also the fourth time in their history, Sunderland have lost a game with this scoreline, with the other defeats by the same margin against Sheffield Wednesday in 1911, West Ham United in 1968 and Watford in 1982. This remains the Saint's joint-fourth biggest win in history. The game was also included on the list of English Premier League highest scoring games and biggest wins in history.
