 On this day in 2008, Portsmouth Right-back Glen McLeod Cooper Johnson scored a spectacular 30-yard volley with his left foot in an eventual 2-2 draw with Hull City at Fratton Park. Johnson was later awarded the Match of the Day' s Goal of the Month award. 


 On this day in 2003, Fabio Cannavaro unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner as Inter Milan beat Reggina 6-0.

 On this day in 2014, Leon Osman marked his 400th appearance for Everton by scoring the winner in an eventual 2-1 defeat over West Ham United at Goodison Park.  

 On this day in 2001, Alun Armstong came up as a substitute to hand Ipswich Town a famous victory over Inter Milan at Portman Road.

Happy Birthday to former Julius Berger, Maccabi Haifa, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Guangzhou R&F, Al-Rayyan, Reading, Kayserispor and Coventry City striker Yakubu Ayegbeni who turns 37 today. At Maccabi Haifa, he, became the first  African and the fifth youngest player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick, netting all three goals in a 3-0 win over Greek side Olympiacos F.C. on 24 September 2002. He is the second highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals. Capped 57 times by the Super Eagles, Yakubu is the third highest scorer in the history of the Nigeria national football team with 21 goals to his name. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Yakubu notably missed an open goal from three metres against South Korea in the last Group game, but later went on to score a penalty in an eventual 2-2 draw.
